First released in 1977, Four Basic Kinds of Lines & Colour is a landmark artist’s book created by the distinguished conceptual artist Sol LeWitt.
First published in 1977, Four Basic Kinds of Lines & Colour is a seminal artist’s book by renowned conceptual artist Sol LeWitt (1928–2007). Comprising 34 pages of drawings, it exemplifies LeWitt’s early use of a systematic, algorithmic approach where a defined set of rules generates images explored through all possible variations. Originating in the late 1960s from his wall drawing methodology, LeWitt adapted this process to artists’ books. This volume illustrates 34 distinct combinations of four fundamental line types—horizontal, vertical, left diagonal, and right diagonal—each rendered in one of four colors: red, yellow, blue, or black. Each page presents a unique pairing, such as blue horizontal lines. As one of LeWitt’s hallmark bookworks, the original edition is rare, making this new facsimile edition particularly important, given that few, if any, of his more than 50 artist books have been reissued.
